Football Breaks Four Year Losing Streak

By: J.T. Washington

Graceland University football notches their first win in four years in dra- matic fashion. The atmosphere from tip-off was electric with it being Graceland’s first home game of the season going against Evangel. At first, Evangel was rolling on offense and it seemed there was nothing our Yellowjackets could do to stop them as they jumped out to a 21-0 lead early in the 2nd quarter. However, Graceland found their rhythm and came roaring back to make it a two point ball game before the half ended.

The next half proved to be a nail-bitter as both teams made astounding plays on defense. John L’Heurex and Kanoa Johnson came in the clutch with a timely 45 yd pick six and a blocked punt return for a touchdown which gave us a solid 11 point lead. Evangel fought back to make the game within reach down four points . You could cut the tension with a knife as each team battled to pull away. But Cade Ross and his 3 headed monster of a receiving core with Reggie Wilson, Gerald Monroe, and Trae Blake were too much to handle for the Valor. All three combined for over a whopping 350 receiving yds on the day. Reggie Wilson caught a 63 yard bomb from Cade late in the game which resulted the game being in 46- 35. Graceland wins.

Graceland fans stormed the field wildly celebrating and congratulating the first win in a long time for the Yellowjackets. They not only celebrated the win, but the amazing resiliency and toughness showed throughout on both sides of the ball when things weren’t going their way. Defensive lineman Emariye Louden had a great quote to sum up what happened out there. “We trusted our stuff, we didn’t put our head down. We fought with energy and intensity that hasn’t been seen for years...now that energy is the standard.” Hard times come but they don’t sure last forever. Graceland football isn’t stopping here and plans are to keep stacking wins on top of wins. Nobody can see the future but from this angle it is looking bright for the Graceland Yellowjackets.
